Atletico Madrid have lost all chances of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages by failing to beat Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.
The the score tied at 2-2 at the fired-up Wanda Metropolitano, the Rojiblancos were awarded a penalty eight minutes into the stoppage time. Yannick Carrasco stepped up and had his shot saved by Lukas Hradecky, Saul Niguez hit a follow-up header into the crossbar, and the last chance fell to Reinilson whose shot caught Carrasco and bounced over the bar.

At that point, referee Clement Turpin blew the final whistle, and Atletico have been left only with hope of finishing third in their group and continuing their European campaign a tier lower. For that, they will have to avoid defeat away to FC Porto next week, or otherwise hope that Club Brugge leave Leverkusen triumphant.
