Blatter challenge will not split FIFA

Mohamed Bin Hammam has rejected concerns that his bid to unseat FIFA President Sepp Blatter could lead to a split in the governing body.

Asian Football Confederation chief Bin Hammam intends to run against Swiss incumbent Blatter in the forthcoming FIFA presidential elections.

Blatter, 75, has held the role for 13 years but reportedly has no intention of stepping aside at any time in the near future.

Outgoing FIFA executive committee member Franz Beckenbauer has warned about the potential negative consequences of a fierce battle for the organisation’s leadership.

But Bin Hammam, 61, believes the former Germany international’s concerns are unfounded.

“I am a huge fan of Franz Beckenbauer,” Bin Hammam said.

“He is a football legend, one of my favourite people in life. But why should FIFA split if two candidates are running for the presidency?”

“I always respect my competitors. President Blatter is a colleague and friend. I won’t create or encourage any environment that will divide the football family.”

“It’s not about us, it’s about football and the fans, we direct football on their behalf.”

“This is our focus, they are important to us. Public opinion about how we are working and conducting our business is very important.”
