Boateng signs new Bayern deal; West Ham weigh up move for Obafemi Martins

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has put pen to paper on a three-year contract extension at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has put pen to paper on a three-year contract extension at the Allianz Arena, according to the club’s official website, Fcbayern.telekom.de.

Boateng, whose deal was set to expire after next season, is now under contract at Bayern until the summer of 2018.

The Germany international, 25, has started the 2013/14 campaign on sensational form for the European champions, having tallied one goal and one assist in 20 appearances in all competitions.

“I am very happy,” said Boateng. “Bayern are one of the biggest football clubs in the world.

“I enjoy every day working with the team.”

Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer added: “The club are very pleased with Jerome. We know how much he has developed and the part he has played in our success.

“Good centre-backs are relatively rare nowadays.

“We used to say centre-halves were hewn from the wood in the forest, but nowadays they need all-round ability, in pressing, tackling, passing, and initiating moves.

“They need a very good footballing education, and that’s Jerome. His performances have also become much more consistent. We’re delighted he’s a part of our team.”

The one-time Manchester City defender, who joined Bayern in a deal worth €13.5 million in July 2011, lost at the hands of his former club on Matchday 6 in the UEFA Champions League.

Man-of-the-match James Milner earned a penalty, which was subsequently converted by Aleksandar Kolarov, and scored a goal as City defeated the treble winners at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night.

However, Bayern still managed to win Group D.

Internacional accept Santos’ offer for Damiao

Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of missing out on one of their long-term transfer targets as Leandro Damiao nears a move to Santos, Metro understands.

Andre Villas-Boas has been chasing the signature of Damiao for more than 12 months and was being linked with another attempt to lure the player to North London in January.

The Brazil international, once valued at £40 million by Internacional, is set to join Santos for a fee of £12 million.

Now then, AVB will surely be looking to add another striker when the transfer window re-opens in the New Year, with Spurs averaging just one goal per game in the English Premier League.

Recent reports have linked the North Londoners with a January swoop for Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez.

West Ham weigh up move for Obafemi Martins

West Ham United are contemplating a loan move for Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins in the January transfer window.

The Hammers, currently in 17th-place in the Premier League table (level on points with second-bottom Crystal Palace), have scored just 13 goals in 15 league matches this term.

With Andy Carroll out and Carlton Cole and Modibo Maiga not providing any goal-scoring threat, bringing in Martins seems like a good, albeit desperate, idea.

Martins, who scored seven goals in 21 La Liga appearances for Levante in 2012/13, bagged eight goals and two assists for Seattle Sounders last season.
