Jerome Boateng believes new Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola will utilise him as a centre-back next season.
The Germany international can also be used at full-back, but admits his preference is to play in a more central role.
And the 24-year-old is confident he can play himself into Germany’s FIFA World Cup squad for next year’s tournament in Brazil.
“My feeling tells me that we will play mostly with four (defenders) but also with three depending on the game situation and how good we will cope with it,” Boateng said.
“I think the manager knows that I am a centre-back at my best. He admitted it to me. In recent years players were missing in several positions and I did my job for the team.
“Now I have played one or two years at Bayern very solid as a centre-back.
“So I think that the manager sees myself central and I will play there. In this World Cup year I want to play my best and obviously to be in the World Cup squad.”
Boateng also said it was tough to see striker Mario Gomez depart the Bungesliga champions for Serie A side Fiorentina.
“It was hard for me, because Mario is one of my best friends not only here (but) in general,” he continued.
“Obviously the decision was very difficult for him but now he is happy he has done it and is looking forward to the new start.
“Everyone is only wishing (him) the best. We are in preparation right now and have to prepare the new season properly.”
