Boateng uncomfortable with fullback role

Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng believes he is more suited to play in the centre of defence, rather than in the fullback position.

The Germany international has been deployed on the right side of the backline by coach Jupp Heynckes as Daniel Van Buyten and Holger Badstuber have established themselves as the club’s first-choice pairing.

Boateng, who joined Bayern from Manchester City in the offseason, has been able to impress in the position, but he conceded that he finds things easier in the heart of defence.

“This is the coach’s choice,” Boateng said. “He knows that I feel more comfortable in the position of central defender.”

The 23-year-old hailed Bayern’s display in the 4-0 victory against Hertha Berlin, which allowed the club to strengthen their position at the summit of the Bundesliga table.

“It was an important victory for us,” Boateng said. “We obviously prepared well for the game, and as we had already shown, we played a lot on the flanks.”

“We exploited the gaps well and made a lot of pressure on the flanks.”
