San Lorenzo have a good chance of winning the Argentinian championship following a 4-1 win over Independiente, while Boca Juniors couldn’t manage more than a goalless draw at Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.
Boca began the day as leaders and were the most likely candidate to win the championship, but at Gimnasia y Esgrima it just wasn’t meant to be. Instead, all Boca got from this game was a 64th-minute red card to Morel.
Being aware of Boca’s draw, San Lorenzo played freely against Independiente and it paid off. Barrientos opened the score in the 19th minute and former Real Madrid and Internazionale player Santiago Solari doubled the advantage two minutes later.
When Aguirre netted for 3-0 four minutes before the break, the home crowd knew that their side would begin the final match day in first place. Barrientos added another in the 57th minute and Nuñez’ goal for 4-1 in the 68th minute couldn’t silence the celebrations.
San Lorenzo, Boca Juniors and Tigre all have 36 points, but San Lorenzo have a much better goal record.
Next week, San Lorenzo get a chance of securing the title at Argentinos Juniors. Boca Juniors host Colon de Santa Fe and Tigre face Banfield. CA Lanus, who in theory still have a chance of winning the league, play against San Martin de Tucuman.
