In a showdown at the top of the Bundesliga II table on Friday evening, Bochum will host a struggling Hamburg when this weekend’s fixtures open up.

Starting with the hosts, eventually leaving fellow promotion chasers Greuther Fürth with a 2-1 win to show for their troubles, there is no doubt that mood in Bochum’s camp should be at a real high. Managing to extend their stay at the top of the Bundesliga II table and holding a five-point buffer from dropping out of the automatic spots, Thomas Reis’ men are tipped as the leading contender to book a top-tier return this year. Securing back-to-back victories since that close-fought defeat against Erzgebirge Aue on the road last month, Bochum have managed to collect 12 points from their last five Bundesliga II matchups. Holding an eye-catching record on home soil and also picking up a hugely impressive 3-1 victory when they faced off against Friday’s opponents back in November, Reis’ side will be confident of extending on their recent purple patch this week.

As for the visitors, while Hamburg might have found themselves battling it out at the top of the table when opening February, the former German giants find themselves in the midst of a real sluggish spell. While The Blues might have managed to come from behind to grab a point against Holstein Kiel on home soil last time out, they are comfortably enduring their worst run of the season so far. Slipping down to third and with only their goal difference keeping them in the promotion play-off spot, Head Coach Daniel Thioune has seen his side fail to win any of their last five Bundesliga II matchups. With their recent issues highlighted by back-to-back 3-2 and 2-1 defeats against Würzburger Kickers and St. Pauli, Hamburg should face another long evening’s work when they travel to Bochum on Friday.
