Bolton manager Owen Coyle accepts top scorer Johan Elmander could walk away for nothing at the end of the season – but is desperate to keep him at the Reebok.
The club’s record 10-million-pound signing has yet to sign a new deal and revealed this week that he was under ‘no obligation’ to stay.
The 10-goal Swedish striker is part of Coyle’s plans for next season – but the Wanderers manager admits the decision is out of his hands.
“Phil Gartside [Bolton chairman] sat down with Johan’s representatives at the end of November, beginning of December,” Coyle revealed.
“It was a good meeting but they came away saying they would chat again in the spring which indicated that Johan didn’t want to go anywhere in January.”
“Johan is well within his rights to let his contract run out and then decide what he wants to do. I don’t have any problem with that. He’s always been very honest and upfront with me, and that will continue to be the case.”
“What I do know is we have a terrific player and an outstanding man. I would love to keep Johan at the football club but, ultimately, Johan will decide.”
“He might think there’s something out there that he fancies for himself and that’s his decision. But he’s such an honest lad I’m sure I’ll be the first to know.”
Bolton host Everton on Sunday having lost just twice at home this season but come up against a side showing signs of improvement.
Having hit five goals against Blackpool last weekend, David Moyes’ men have moved within three points of Bolton and could climb above them with victory at the Reebok.
Daniel Sturridge will continue up front after scoring twice in two games since arriving on loan from Chelsea.
Full-back Gretar Steinsson is still missing with a knee injury while Chung-Yong Lee is a doubt after picking up a knock in the 2-1 defeat against Tottenham last weekend.
