Girondins de Bordeaux have won the French Super Cup, finally making an end to Olympique de Lyon’s dominance in recent years.
Olympique had won the last six editions of the year’s first official cup final, and were looking to add a seventh at Bordeaux’ Chaban-Delmas stadium.
But the thirty thousand spectators watched as neither side managed to break through the opposing defense in regular time and penalties were needed who was to take away the first trophy of the season.
Cup winners Bordeaux started the shoot out in the worst way possible with Cavenaghi missing his effort. The next five penalties were scored.
And things looked even worse for the hosts when Bellion missed penalty number seven, but Sidney Govou then failed to pull the trigger and missed as well.
Yoann Gourcuff scored the ninth penalty and Fabio Grosso, hero in Italy’s penalty shoot out with France at World Cup 06, now wasn’t able to get the ball past goalkeeper Ramé.
The next three penalties were scored, after which Lyon captain Cris had the misfortune of missing the deciding spot kick.
The trophy is Girondins’ first Super Cup victory since 1987.
