Chile’s football association have announced that Claudio Borghi will manage the country’s side for their 2014 World Cup campaign.

Argentine Borghi will succeed countryman Marcelo Bielsa, who helped Chile qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa before resigning earlier this month.

The 55-year-old Bielsa cited differences with Chilean FA president Sergio Jadue for leaving the post.

Borghi’s first trophy target will be the Copa America in Argentina in July, before preparing a squad to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil.

“This is the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced in my life, but when you’re a coach you experience things like this,” Borghi said.

“I hope I can prove myself worthy of the job. We’re going to make every effort to ensure things work out as well as they can.”

Borghi’s managerial highlights include extensive success with Chilean club Colo Colo, who he led to four consecutive titles in 2006 and 2007 – two Clausura and Apertura trophies respectively – and a Copa Sudamericana final.

The newly-appointed manager acknowledged the work of his predecessor, admitting change was necessary for Chile to move forward on the field.

“Marcelo had some really good results but someone else always has to come in sooner or later, no matter how well things have gone for you.”

“We feel up to the job and we hope to build on all the good things Bielsa has left behind.”
