Marco Reus’s 92nd-minute strike completed a stunning 8-4 victory for Borussia Dortmund over Group F rivals Legia Warsaw, setting a new Champions League record in the process.
Reus, making his first start of the season, marked a memorable comeback from injury with a hat-trick – his stoppage-time effort representing the 12th goal of the contest – overcoming the Champions League record of 11, which was set by Monaco’s 8-3 demolition of Deportivo La Coruna in 2003.
Here is how events unfolded at Signal Iduna Park, in a game that is likely to live long in the memory:
10 – LEGIA LEAD 1-0. Aleksandar Prijovic puts Legia ahead with a sublime finish off the outside of his boot.
17 – DORTMUND EQUALISE, 1-1. Shinji Kagawa restores parity with a close-range header from Ousmane Dembele’s cross.
18 – DORTMUND LEAD 2-1. Kagawa doubles his tally with a venomous strike from the edge of the area.
20 – DORTMUND LEAD 3-1. Nuri Sahin heads home after a calamitous error from Legia goalkeeper Radoslaw Cierzniak.
24 – LEGIA PULL ONE BACK, 3-2. Prijovic sweeps home his second of the match after shambolic defending from the hosts.
29 – DORTMUND LEAD 4-2. Prijovic rattles the woodwork from point-blank range, with Dembele adding Dortmund’s fourth from the resulting counter-attack.
32 – DORTMUND LEAD 5-2. Reus gets in on the act, tucking home after connecting with Kagawa’s delivery.
Half-Time
52 – DORTMUND LEAD 6-2. Reus has his second when he prods home Dembele’s cross.
57 – LEAGIE SCORE, 6-3. Legia pull one back once more – Michal Kucharczyk dinking a finish over Roman Weidenfeller.
81 – DORTMUND LEAD 7-3. Andre Schurrle’s effort hits the crossbar, but Felix Passlack is on hand to nod in Dortmund’s seventh.
83 – LEGIA SCORE, 7-4. Substitute Nemanja Nikolic snatches the visitors’ fourth, levelling the previous Champions League record of 11 goals in one match.
92 – DORTMUND LEAD 8-4. Reus caps off his return with a third goal, sliding a finish through the legs of Cierzniak from an acute angle.
Full-time, and a new record, as Monaco acknowledged!
