One of the hottest names in the transfer market this summer has been Ousmane Dembele.

The Borussia Dortmund star winger has been linked with a potential move away from Signal Iduna Park. FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester City have expressed interest in his services, but luring him away from Dortmund is not going to be easy.

In fact, at one point it seemed the Bundesliga giants were willing to sell the French winger. Dortmund reportedly asked for around €90 million to let him go, and even though Barcelona were willing to offer that kind of money, Dortmund backed out and said they do no want to sell their star player. In fact, Dortmund’s sporting director, Michael Zorc, said there is “no way” Dembele is leaving the team this summer.

Dortmund Are Taking The Right Approach

The market opened only four days ago, so there is a lot of time left in case any team wants to sign the French winger. But Dortmund needs to stay put and keep the players as long as they can. Dembele has all the traits to become a superstar sooner than later, and contending teams do not sell their star players just because. If Dortmund want to return to become the European powerhouse they were in the past, they need to build something with Dembele as their main player.

Saying “their main player” might be a stretch right now considering Dortmund has players such as Marco Reus, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, and Mario Götze on the squad. But if we fast forward to three or five years, it is hard to not imagine Dembele as Dortmund’s most important weapon.

A Star On The Making

The French winger is already part of his National Team. He already has one year of experience in the Bundesliga, and thrived in it. The Bundesliga is one of the toughest leagues in Europe, but he still finished the year with 10 goals and 21 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions. Obviously those numbers would improve in a few more years, so we might be looking at a player capable of netting 20 goals and 20 assists per season. It takes a special talent to do that, and Dembele was already quite close this past season. Let’s remember, he is only 21 years old.

So yes, Dortmund are doing the right thing. If Aubameyang, Reus, and Christian Pulisic are not leaving the team any team soon, then neither should Dembele. And even though Dortmund could really use €90 million they might receive in a potential transfer, they will regret it. Just ask Rennes. They already sold him for €15 million, and his value already increased more than 100% in the past 12 months.

Right now, it seems everybody loves Dembele. But Dortmund needs to hold on to him as long as they can. They will reap the benefits later, because the winger is talented enough to make Dortmund an European powerhouse again.
