Borussia Dortmund wanted Klopp back

“I knew that Jurgen would cancel, that he will fulfill his contract in Liverpool. Jurgen has always fulfilled his contracts, so he is, but if you want to go new ways, and we had to break new ground at BVB, then at least I had to ask Jurgen if he could possibly imagine that. I did not expect that at all, but I would not have forgiven myself for not asking him at that moment.”

Those are the words of Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, who has confirmed that he had previously attempted to lure Jurgen Klopp away from Liverpool and back to Borussia Dortmund. Watzke himself admitted that he knew Jurgen almost certainly wouldn’t go for the idea, but at the very least, he knew that he had to try.

Klopp made a name for himself in the world of football management with Dortmund, before going on to do some truly wonderful things with Liverpool. Now, with the Reds riding high, Dortmund will be left to wonder what could’ve been.
