Opening up this weekend’s fixtures with a London derby, Chelsea will be seeking a far more polished display when they welcome Crystal Palace to Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime.
Starting with the hosts, throwing away the lead late on in midweek and watching bitter rivals Tottenham knock them out of the EFL Cup on penalties, Chelsea have failed to lay down much of an early marker this season. Despite breaking the bank and spending more than any side across Europe over the summer, Frank Lampard’s men have won just one of their opening three Premier League appearances and once again showed their defensive issues in what was shocking fashion last weekend. While the former England midfielder might have seen his side salvage what was a hugely unlikely point at top-flight returners West Brom, their performance at the Hawthorns came under real scrutiny. Entering the half-time interval on the wrong end of a stunning 3-0 scoreline, Lampard’s side are yet to record a single clean sheet so far this season and their leaky defence could be in for another stern test in West London this weekend.
As for the visitors, at the center of even more VAR controversy at Selhurst Park last weekend and watching a high-flying Everton end their 100% start, Roy Hodgson made his feelings on Joel Ward’s handball very clear after their 2-1 defeat. However, although the Eagles might have failed to make it three in three on home soil last time out, the one-time England boss has seen his side make some real improvements since opening the New Year. Putting in what was a stunning display away at Old Trafford a fortnight ago, they landed a very impressive 3-1 win on their travels and they also have one attacking talisman enjoying an early-season purple patch. Already racking up three Premier League strikes this year and appearing to be staying put in South London, Wilfried Zaha and co could be smelling another upset on the road this weekend. With five of the last seven matchups between the two sides seeing both teams finding the net, we’re backing a similar outcome on Saturday lunchtime.
