With a spot in the third round of this year’s League Cup up for grabs, Grimsby will host fellow League Two outfit Macclesfield on Tuesday night.

Starting with the hosts, while Grimsby may have opened the new League Two campaign with some real momentum, Michael Jolley’s side suffered a 2-0 defeat at home against Crewe and are in the midst of a minor blip. Now coming off the back of back-to-back defeats, the White and Blacks have lost their spot in the top-six and fans around Lincolnshire will have growing concerns over their sides defensive issues. Now shipping a pair of goals in each of their two previous defeats at Blundell Park, Tuesday’s hosts have recorded just one clean sheet in their last six appearances.

As for the visitors, while Macclesfield may have been disappointed to have only picked up a 1-1 draw against Crawley over the weekend, new boss Daryl McMahon is enjoying a bright start at the Moss Rose Ground. Managing to dramatically avoid the drop last season, fans in Cheshire have seen their side enjoy a four-match unbeaten run in England’s fourth-tier. A huge part of Macclesfield bright start has come down to their recent performances on the road. With only their goal difference keeping them out of the play-off spots, Tuesday’s guests are also unbeaten in their last three matches on their travels.
