In a contest between two sides who found themselves enjoying real purple patches before last year’s campaign was scrapped, Lille and Rennes will open up the 2020/2021 season when they meet on Saturday night.
Starting with the hosts, while Lille might have been left heartbroken to have missed out on a Champions League return by just a single point after last year’s campaign was brought to an early halt, Christophe Galtier’s side had gained a string of admirers. Last seen on Ligue 1 duties picking up what now looks like a very impressive 1-0 win against Champions League semi-finalists Lyon prior to football’s enforced break, the former Saint-Etienne boss found his side in the midst of a three-match winning run and Les Dogues had collected a remarkable 18 points over their final seven domestic appearances. Also claiming back-to-back victories on home soil, a run highlighted by a 3-0 romp against Toulouse, Lille will be looking to lay down a top-four marker when they make their return to action this weekend.
As for the visitors, managing to wrap up a stunning third-place finish in last year’s interrupted campaign, Rennes have a maiden Champions League appearance on the horizon and cemented their spot as the Ligue 1 dark horses. Despite playing out a dramatic 3-2 defeat against Nice in a behind closed doors friendly last week, Les Rennais were last seen on top-flight duties picking up a glittering 5-0 romp against Montpellier back in March and much like Saturday’s hosts, Julien Stéphan’s side found themselves in the midst of their own three-match Ligue 1 winning run. Losing just one of their last four contests against Lille, there is no doubt that the Reds will be looking to make their own statement this weekend. With six of the last seven meetings between Lille and Rennes seeing both teams find the net by the final whistle, we’re backing a similar outcome at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Saturday night.
