Knowing that three points in midweek will help them officially secure another top-two finish, Melbourne City will meet Adelaide at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Tuesday morning.
Starting with Melbourne, making their long-awaited return to action last week and putting on a real clinic, the Sky Blues will simply be looking to officially secure another campaign in the AFC Champions League. Really catching the eye and picking up a deserved 2-0 win against runaway leaders and bitter rivals Sydney FC on their A-League return, Erick Mombaerts’ men have collected 13 points over their last six contests and Tuesday’s temporary hosts also have quite the reputation for their continued displays in front of goal. Including a pair of 4-2 and 3-2 wins against Perth and Central Coast prior to the enforced break, it is also worth keeping an eye out for leading marksman Jamie Maclaren in midweek. Marking his return to action and finding the net against Sydney last week, the one-time Hibernian ace has five goals in his last four matchups for the Sky Blues, including a hat-trick against the Mariners back in March.
As for Adelaide, while the Reds might have sacrificed the lead against Syndey last week and had to settle for a point at the ANZ Stadium, Head Coach Carl Veart was rightfully filled with praise for his side. Knowing that three more points should secure their spot in the top-six, the former Crystal Palace coach finds his side in the midst of a four-match unbeaten run as they open their season finale in midweek. Likely to still be boosted by what was a dramatic 5-3 win against now-former champions Perth earlier in the month, there is no doubt that Adelaide will be desperate to find some much-needed defensive resolve as they enter the play-offs. Shipping a trio of stikes against the Purples, Veart’s men have managed to record just a single clean sheet in any of their last 10 A-League appearances. In a contest that is famous for producing lively encounters, we’re backing both teams to find the net on Tuesday morning.
