With a golden opportunity to pick up a Premier League scalp and pull off an upset this weekend, Middlesbrough will welcome Spurs to the Riverside on Sunday afternoon.

Starting with the hosts, while Middlesbrough may have endured a torrid start to the new Championship campaign, the Reds have suddenly clicked into gear at a crucial time. Putting in yet another stellar display and picking up a 2-0 win away at play-off hopefuls Preston on New Year’s Day, Jonathan Woodgate’s men have begun flying up the Championship standings and are now in the midst of a four-match winning run. With the mood in the North East the highest it has been since bringing in the former England defender, the Reds have tasted defeat just once since the end of November and there is no doubt that fans around the Riverside will be relishing Tottenham’s arrival this weekend.

As for the visitors, putting in yet another worrying display away at Southampton on New Year’s Day, new boss Jose Mourinho is suddenly out of his honeymoon period. Watching the Saints pick up a deserved 1-0 win at St. Mary’s earlier in the week, Spurs’ top-four deficit has once again been cut to six points and the former Chelsea boss has seen his side win just one of their last four matchups. Still dealing with some glaring issues at the back and managing to record just a single clean sheet since the start of November, there is no doubt that Mourinho’s men could be in for another tricky afternoon on the road this weekend.
