In what could prove to be an extremely lively encounter in New Jersey this weekend, a struggling New York Red Bulls will host a resurgent Toronto late on Saturday night.

Starting with the hosts, although the Red Bulls were briefly handed the chance to climb to the top of the East earlier in the month, Chris Armas’ side have started to stall at a crucial time. Suffering a surprise 3-2 loss away at a struggling Columbus Crew last time out, the former MLS champions have lost two of their last three contests and fans in New Jersey are growing more concerned by their teams’ form defensively. New York has shipped three or more goals in four of their last six MLS appearances and it is also worth noting that they have managed to record just a single clean sheet on home soil since the middle of May.

As for the visitors, picking up a 2-1 win over FC Cincinnati over the weekend and now winning three of their last four MLS outings, the mood in Toronto’s camp is on the rise. Now handed the chance to leapfrog the Red Bulls in the Eastern standings and reclaim a play-off spot, Greg Vanney’s men have really begun to show signs of improvement in the final third and also caught the eye in their 2-0 victory away at Montreal last week. Despite only managing to record a single clean sheet since the 16th of May, Toronto will be boosted by their most recent performance against Saturday’s hosts. When the two sides met in Ontario a fortnight ago, the Reds picked up a very commanding 3-1 victory.
