Two sides who find themselves really looking for some kind of boost in the early hours of Thursday, New York Red Bulls will host Columbus Crew in midweek.

Starting with the hosts, while The Red Bulls might have found themselves an immediate boost when they brought in Head Coach Gerhard Struber last year, New York are in the midst of a real crisis. Suffering last-gasp heartbreak after conceding a 98th minute penalty away at Montreal, the former Barnsley boss saw his side get hit with a 2-1 defeat on the road. Now once again tipped as a real outsider in the race to secure a Final Series spot, the Eastern Conference outfit have only continued to show a host of issues at the back. Managing to muster just a single point from any of their last five MLS matchups, a run that has seen them suffer 2-1 and 3-2 defeats against Chicago and New England, Struber has also seen his side land just a single victory since the start of July. It should also be noted, The Red Bulls have seen six of their last eight fixtures finish with both teams finding the net.

As for the visitors, putting in what was their own worrying display over the weekend, Columbus find themselves in an almost identical position to their Eastern Conference rivals. Dropping out of the Final Series spots and only showing a host of issues over the past three weeks, The Crew are now in the midst of a dreadful four-match MLS losing run. Freefalling down the table, Head Coach Caleb Porter will have a real headache over his side’s extended problems at the back. Including 4-2 and 4-1 defeats against DC United and NYCFC, Columbus have now shipped 12 goals on their losing run. With just a pair of wins to their name since June 20th, don’t be surprised to see another lively affair at The Red Bull Arena in midweek. With four of the last five meetings between Thursday’s opponents finishing with both teams finding the net, we’re backing an identical outcome here.
