Desperate to move one step closer to booking their spot at next year’s European Championships, Scotland will welcome Israel to an empty Hampden on Thursday night.
Starting with the hosts, last seen putting in what was another eye-catching display as they landed a 2-1 win away at the Czech Republic on Nations League duties last month, Scotland have made a string of improvements since appointing Steve Clarke. Enjoying what has been by far their most fruitful run in recent memory and with their 1-1 draw against Israel the only minor blip on their record over the past 12 months, it does appear there is a new-found confidence in the Tartan Army’s camp. Signing off their EURO 20201 qualifying campaign with a real flurry and winning each of their final three appearances on the spin, the former Kilmarnock boss has seen his side enjoy a new-found clinical edge in the final third. Spearheaded by John McGinn’s international purple patch, Scotland have bagged 16 goals on their five-match unbeaten run and we could be in for another lively contest in Glasgow this week.
As for the visitors, opening this year’s Nations League campaign with back-to-back 1-1 draws against Scotland and Slovakia last month, Israel have struggled to find any real momentum over the past 16 months. With a 3-1 win against Latvia last month their only victory over any of their previous nine contests across all competitions, Head Coach Willibald Ruttensteiner has been vocal about his side’s continued issues at the back. Including back-to-back 3-2 and 3-1 defeats against Slovenia and Austria last month, the Blue and Whites have recorded just a sole competitive clean sheet since October 2018. However, along with playing out a 1-1 draw when they faced off against Scotland on Nations League duties last month, it should also be noted that each of the last four meetings between Thursday’s opponents have finished with both teams finding the net.
