Two sides making their Bundesliga returns on Saturday afternoon, Werder Bremen will be hoping to continue on their summer purple patch when they host Hertha Berlin.
Starting with the hosts, while Werder Bremen might have just about managed to keep hold of their Bundesliga status thanks to a dramatic 2-2 draw away at Heidenheim and scraping through on away goals, the Greens appear to have made some real improvements this summer. Coming past lower league Carl Zeiss Jena in the DFP Pokal when making a return to competitive action, Florian Kohfeldt’s men remarkably won each of their six pre-season appearances on the bounce. Collecting a thumping 4-1 win against Greek outfit LASK in what would have been a huge morale-boost for Bremen, fans around the Weserstadion will also be hoping for a similar performance they produced on their Bundesliga finale back in June. Last seen on home soil landing a stunning 6-1 romp against Koln, we could be in for another lively encounter this weekend.
As for the visitors, while Bremen might have enjoyed a real summer purple patch in the build-up to their Bundesliga return, the same cannot be said for Hertha Berlin. Crashing out of the DFP Pokal last weekend after what was the most stunning of 5-4 defeats against lower league Eintracht Braunschweig, Bruno Labbadia’s side also signed off their pre-season preparations with three losses on the bounce. Unsurprisingly still dealing with a string of issues at the back, the Old Lady also gained a real reputation for their rather worrying patch at the end of the extended 2019/2020 campaign. Last seen on top-flight duties getting hit with a 2-1 defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Saturday’s guests managed to collect just three points over any of their final five Bundesliga appearances.
