(GSM) – VfB Stuttgart defender Khalid Boulahrouz has been left confused by Ajax’s decision to pull out of a deal which would have seen the defender return to Holland.

The former Chelsea player appeared to be on the verge of a winter transfer to Martin Jol’s side, who have not yet given up hope of the Eredivisie title.

Boulahrouz claims he was prepared to accept a pay cut to leave Stuttgart in order to enhance his World Cup chances by returning to his homeland.

But the 28-year-old has accused Ajax of pulling the plug on the deal, describing the events as ‘weird’.

“I was willing to go far to play for Ajax,” Boulahrouz told Voetbal International.

“In view of the World Cup, I was willing to accept a significant pay cut.”

He added: “It took a while before they arrived at a concrete offer, but this was later withdrawn. The club put a stop to it.

“That was a little weird. The last time we looked at whether there were opportunities that was not the case.”
