Sunderland footballer Titus Bramble was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of rape, police said.
The 29-year-old defender was questioned by detectives investigating an alleged attack on a young woman at a hotel in Newcastle, northeast England, near the home of the English premiership club.
“Police received a report of a rape of a woman at a city centre hotel in Newcastle in the early hours (of Wednesday). Two men, aged 29 and 30, have been arrested on suspicion of rape,” a Northumbria Police spokesman said.
The second man arrested is Bramble’s brother, Tesfaye, police said. The 30-year-old has played international football for Montserrat, a British island in the Caribbean, and currently plays non-league football in eastern England.
Titus Bramble, who formerly played for Ipswich and Newcastle, was signed to Sunderland from Wigan in July for a reported fee of one million pounds (1.5 million dollars, 1.2 million euros).
