Sunderland defender Titus Bramble has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and drug possession.
The 30-year-old, who played in Sunderland’s 2-1 English Premier League defeat at Norwich earlier this week, was arrested by police in Cleveland, outside Middlesbrough, on Wednesday.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and possession of a Class A drug.”
“He is currently being questioned by police and inquiries are on-going.”
A Sunderland spokesman said: “The club is looking into this matter but due to ongoing police investigations is unable to comment further at this stage.”
Bramble was arrested last year over an alleged rape in Newcastle but was later released without charge.
