Brazilian star Marta and England’s Kelly Smith were among the Women’s Professional Soccer All-Star 11 named Tuesday to face Swedish champions Umea IK in the US league’s All-Star Game on August 30.
Four Americans and seven international players were voted to the team in balloting split evenly between media, players, coaches and supporters.
Marta led the Los Angeles Sol to the regular-season crown and a berth in the WPS championship game and was joined in the lineup by teammates Karina LeBlanc of Canada at goalkeeper, US midfielder Shannon Boxx and French midfielder Camille Abily.
England’s Smith, Alex Scott and Eniola Aluko and France’s Sonia Bompastor completed the global honorees, joined by Americans Lori Chalupny, Amy LePeilbet and Tina Ellertson.
Players selected Los Angeles Sol coach Abner Rogers to guide the squad in the All-Star matchup at suburban St. Louis. He will help select seven other players to fill out the lineup.
