Fluminense midfielder Marquinho scored the only goal as the Rio de Janeiro club beat Palmeiras 1-0 in Brazil’s Serie A on Sunday.
The win takes Fluminense to 10th place in the table, four points behind fifth-placed Palmeiras.
Marquinho struck in the 74th minute against Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side at Estadio General Silvio Raulino de Oliveira.
An ill-tempered match saw nine yellow cards handed out by referee Heber Roberto Lopes, with five going to the visitors.
Also on Sunday, Serie A leaders Corinthians suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 1-0 at home to Cruzeiro.
Forward Wallyson struck what proved to be the winner for the visitors in the 55th minute at Estadio Municipal Paulo Machado de Carvalho.
They held the lead despite going down to 10 men when Gilberto received a second yellow card with 17 minutes remaining.
Corinthians remain first, six points ahead of second-placed Sao Paulo.
In other matches, a brace from Diego Souza helped Vasco da Gama run out 2-1 winners away to Atletico Mineiro.
Magno Alves netted in defeat for the home side, who had Leonardo Silva sent off for a second bookable offence in the 90th minute.
And finally, Bahia played out a 0-0 draw in their match at home to Coritiba.
Both sides finished with 10 men – Leandro Donizete was sent off for the visitors, while Jobson received his marching orders, both for two yellow cards.
