Brazilian Serie A wrap: Atletico Mineiro beat Gremio 1-0

Former Manchester City striker Jo scored the only goal as Atletico Mineiro defeated Gremio on Sunday.

Ronaldinho lined up for Mineiro against the club where he

started his career but he had little chance to shine. After a drab opening 26 minutes, Bernard’s trickery

sparked the game into life as he set up Jo to score. The hosts were close to levelling just two minutes later

as Giovanni kept out Marcelo Moreno.Five minutes before the break Giovanni kept out Moreno

again as Gremio started to get frustrated. It was Atletico who had the better chances in the second

half – Jo squandering a great chance to net his second. With eight minutes remaining things got worse for Gremio

as Anderson Pico was sent off after an innocuous looking challenge on Pierre.Atletico continued to miss chances to increase their

advantage but it did not matter as they held on for victory. The win sees Atletico move into first place on goal

difference, with Vasco da Gama joining them on 16 points. Gremio drop to fifth

on 12 points.Seventh-placed Internacional were held 1-1 at Bahia.Gabriel put the home side ahead in first-half stoppage

time before Indio equalised in the 63rd minute.Mid-table Flamengo defeated Atletico GO 3-2 to keep the

struggling opponents firmly on the bottom of the table in 20th place, trailing

Corinthians by two points. But it could have been so different for the visitors

after Felipe gave them a 28th minute lead. Two goals from veteran midfielder Renato Abreu and

another from Adryan gave the home side a 3-1 lead before Felipe scored his

second 10 minutes from time.In other matches, Palmeiras defeated Figueirense 3-1,

Sport Rectife won 3-2 at Coritiba while Portuguesa and Santos played out a

goalless draw.
