Competition: EFL Cup
Market: Brentford win
Odds: 6/5 @ Bet 365
With a newfound excitement around Griffin Park, Dean Smith’s Brentford side believe this could be in for a successful year for The Bees and they will kick off their EFL Cup campaign when they travel to League One side Southend United on Tuesday.
Starting with the hosts, it has been a difficult start to the new year for The Shrimpers. Now without a win since May, Southend will be even more down to know that on Tuesday night boss Chris Powell will be watching from the sidelines. After being sent off in his sides 1-1 draw with Plymouth last weekend, the former Charlton man could be in for a tough night in the stands. Now failing to win their last three matches at Roots Hall, it will be their defensive issues causing the most concern. Southend have now shipped six in their last three and will struggle against a high-flying Brentford side.
As for Smith’s side, after dominating for large spells away at pre-season favorites Stoke last weekend, one defensive error meant they left The Bet365 Stadium with a single point, but, their confidence will be high. Picking up a 5-1 win against Rotherham in their Championship opener, many have tipped Brentford to be playoff contenders come next year. One man in particular to watch for the vistors is forward Ollie Watkins, the 22-year-old has impressed and has already scored two in his first two.
