Competition: EFL Cup
Market: Brentford win
Odds: 7/5 @ 888sport
Looking to get some revenge on their crosstown rivals in midweek, Brentford will welcome their Premier League opponents across West London on Thursday evening.
Starting with the hosts, losing the likes of Ollie Watkins after watching Fulham beat them in the Championship’s play-off final at Wembley last month, Brentford do have the feel of a squad going through transition after missing out on a debut Premier League campaign. However, while Thomas Frank’s men might have settled for a point against fellow top-six hopefuls Millwall over the weekend, the Bees really have gained a reputation for their exploits in this year’s EFL Cup. Along with picking up a thumping 2-0 win when they made the trip to Southampton earlier in the month, despite make a string of changes, Brentford also picked up another Premier League scalp on their travels last week. Knocking out West Brom thanks to a penalties victory in the Midlands, it should also be noted that Frank’s men landed a 3-0 romp against Huddersfield in their last appearance on home soil.
As for the visitors, while Fulham might have managed to see off their bitter rivals at Wembley last month, the Whites have come crashing drastically back down to earth. With owner Tony Khan going public with his displeasure over their dreadful display on Monday evening, it is no surprise that many have already tipped Fulham as the leading contender to be hit with an immediate drop back down to the Championship. Making a string of costly mistakes in West London earlier in the week, Scott Parker’s men were hit with a 3-0 drumming at the hands of Aston Villa and are yet to land a single point since making their top-flight return last month. With a heap of pressure on his shoulders and a defence that has only continued to show some rather glaring issues, Parker will not be relishing a trip to a Brentford side that have already landed back-to-back Premier League scalps.
