Steve Bruce believes first-time manager Terry Connor could struggle to keep Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League.
Former Sunderland and Wigan boss Bruce had reportedly been in contention to replace Mick McCarthy as manager, who was sacked by Wolves on February 13.
Bruce was ultimately overlooked, with Connor promoted to the top job after spending 13 years as an assistant at Molineux.
According to ex-Manchester United captain Bruce, a battle against relegation will be a tough introduction to management for Connor.
“I went for an interview (at Wolves) and at one stage I thought it was close,” Bruce told the Daily Mail.
“I didn’t go for a second interview, although there was dialogue.”
“In the end they decided to go with Terry and that is entirely their prerogative.”
“I wish him and them all the best because it is a difficult job for an experienced manager, let alone someone trying to cut their teeth.”
“For me, it wasn’t to be, which is a shame because it’s got all the ingredients to be a really good job for someone.”
Wolves are second bottom on the Premier League table, one point off the safety of 17th place.
They host reigning champions and league leaders Manchester United on Sunday.
