Club Brugge are the new leaders in the Belgian league following a 4-2 win over direct rivals Anderlecht. Standard Liege surpass Anderlecht for second place.

The lead in the Pro League was at stake at Brugge’s Jan Breydel stadium, where Antolin Alcaraz put the hosts ahead after 16 minutes.

Tom De Sutter leveled six minutes later but an own goal from Jelle Van Damme restored Brugge’s lead in minute 38 for Wesley Sonck to make it 3-1 a minute later.

Ronald Vargas netted a fourth with seven minutes left in extra time, and De Sutter’s goal for 4-2 in the 92nd minute was nothing but a consolation goal.

As a result, Brugge now have a point more than Anderlecht, who also had to give up second place to Standard.

The only goal at the match between Standard and Genk was scored by Milan Jovanovic, from the penalty spot in the 57th minute.

Standard have the same amount of points as Anderlecht, but the defending champions have a better goal record.
