Porto confirmed they have sacked coach Vitor Bruno after just six months at the helm following back-to-back league defeats to lowly Nacional and Gil Vicente.

Bruno replaced new AC Milan boss Sergio Conceicao in June last year on a two-year contract, becoming the first manager of new president Andre Villas-Boas’ tenure.

After guiding Porto to the Portuguese Super Cup, Bruno oversaw 29 games across all competitions, winning 11 (drawn three, lost eight), averaging a win percentage of 62.07%.

But a run of inconsistent results in the Primeira Liga has proved to be his downfall, with Porto third in the standings and three points behind leaders Sporting.

Sunday’s 3-1 loss away to Gil Vicente marked Porto’s third consecutive defeat in all competitions, having lost to Sporting in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

Porto’s academy director, Jose Tavares, will take over as coach on an interim basis, with his first match coming in the Europa League against Olympiacos on Thursday.

Bruno’s dismissal has now seen managerial changes for all of Portugal’s three main teams at the halfway stage of the season.

Benfica sacked Roger Schmidt in August, while Sporting sacked Ruben Amorim’s successor, Joao Pereira, just over a month after he replaced Manchester United’s new manager.
