Emiliano Buendia will spend the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan with Bayer Leverkusen after his move from Aston Villa was finalised on Wednesday.
Buendia, who made the move to Villa from Norwich City back in 2021, bolsters Xabi Alonso’s attacking ranks in their quest to retain their Bundesliga crown.
The Argentine has made 20 appearances across all competitions under Unai Emery this season, though only four of those have come from the start for the Villans.
Buendia’s game time at Villa Park has been limited recently after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on the eve of the 2023-24 Premier League season.
The deal also sees the 28-year-old sign a contract extension, with Villa also announcing youngster Louie Barry has signed fresh terms before going on loan to Hull City.
“The Bundesliga is very appealing to me,” Buendia said in a statement on the club’s official website.
“Bayer Leverkusen are the defending champions and, in my view, one of the best and most interesting teams in Europe… it’s a great team that plays attractive football.
Leverkusen are in action in the Champions League on Wednesday, hoping to secure a place in the top eight when they face Sparta Prague at the BayArena.
Buendia’s first taste of life under Alonso could come this weekend, with Leverkusen, who are second in the Bundesliga, taking on Hoffenheim this Sunday.
