Thirty-six fans were arrested as city rivals Levski Sofia and CSKA clashed in a Bulgarian league match, the interior ministry announced on Sunday.
Police said the fans, many of whom were under the influence of alcohol or drugs, had turned violent, damaging a bus and two trams.
A total 19 fans were detained before Saturday’s game and 17 more after. Twenty-one were freed Saturday evening, while the other 15 remained in custody awaiting charges, the ministry said in a statement.
CSKA and Levski drew 0-0 in the derby and are now in third and fourth in the league table with 40 and 36 points respectively.
Matches between the two clubs, the most popular in Bulgaria, are often plagued by violent clashes between supporters.
