Borussia Moenchengladbach moved into the Europa League qualification places with a 1-0 win over Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Friday.
The only goal of the game arrived in the 27th minute at Borussia Park, Filip Daems netting what proved to be the winner from the penalty spot.
Kevin Vogt was sent off for bringing down Peniel Mlapa inside the area, leaving the visitors a man down for the remaining 63 minutes.
Juan Arango, Patrick Herrmann and Granit Xhaka all missed chances to extend the home side’s lead, but Augsburg failed to punish their profligacy.
The victory means Gladbach climb to sixth spot, and they will stay there if Eintracht Frankfurt fail to beat fourth-placed Schalke at home on Saturday.
Augsburg meanwhile continue to languish at the wrong end of the standings – they occupy the relegation playoff place in 16th, and could drop into the bottom two if Hoffenheim upset Bayer Leverkusen away this weekend.
