Borussia Monchengladbach remain bottom of the Bundesliga after losing 2-1 at home to Hamburg on Friday.
Propping up the table with just 10 points from 16 games going into the match, Monchengladbach had an opportunity to climb above Stuttgart ahead of the second-bottom team’s meeting with Bayern Munich on Sunday.
But goals from Eljero Elia and Piotr Trochowski secured all three points for Hamburg and handed the hosts their fifth defeat in a row.
Dutch international Elia, set up by Jonathan Pitroipa, opened the scoring with a right-foot shot a minute into the second half at the Borussia-Park.
The lead lasted little more than 60 seconds, before Igor de Camargo connected with a cross from United States international Michael Bradley to equalise from close range.
Sebastian Schachten and de Camargo both went close to putting Monchengladbach in front, while Heiko Westermann and Trochowski spurned chances to restore Hamburg’s advantage.
It was Polish-born Germany international Trochowski who made the breakthrough with a free kick in the 72nd minute.
Paulo Guerrero and substitute Ruud van Nistelrooy passed up opportunities to extend Hamburg’s lead late in the match, but Trochowski’s set-piece effort proved enough to wrap up the win and take Hamburg to eighth on the table.
Monchengladbach meanwhile enter the winter break bottom of the league and without a win at home this season.
