Hannover moved back to third in the Bundesliga after a 3-1 away win at Freiburg on Friday.
The result means Hannover have climbed two points ahead of Bayern Munich in the race for a Champions League qualifying berth next season, meaning Bayern’s game in hand, to be played at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, is crucial.
Hannover’s win came thanks to a bright start that caught the eighth-placed hosts on the back foot, with Jan Schlaudraff particularly impressive in the early stages.
Schlaudraff initially provided the assist for Mohammed Abdellaoue’s 24th minute opener before he turned scorer seven minutes later to double the lead.
Konstantin Rausch added a third 13 minutes into the second half, and although Jan Rosenthal pulled a goal back for the hosts with 11 minutes remaining, the visitors celebrated an impressive victory.
