Hamburg leaped into sixth position on the Bundesliga table with a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt at Imtech Arena on Friday.
It was the fifth consecutive win in all competitions for Armin Veh’s side, including three straight league wins, after striker Mladen Petric found the back of the net in the 65th minute with a left-foot strike from an Anis Ben-Haitra cross.
The victory will momentarily take the focus off the arrival of Hamburg’s new director of sport Matthias Sammer, and the rumours regarding the playing future of striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has been linked with a return to Real Madrid.
It was Frankfurt’s second loss in a row and they remain in eighth place on the table, four points shy of Hamburg.
