Hamburg lifted themselves off the bottom of the Bundesliga on Friday with a surprise 2-1 away win over Stuttgart.
Hamburg had made a dreadful start to the season, with only one point from their opening six games, leading to coach Michael Oenning’s dismissal.
Reserve team coach Rodolfo Esteban Cardoso stepped in as caretaker coach for the match, but his tenure got off to a bad start when Martin Harnik gave Stuttgart the lead after 18 minutes.
But Hamburg emerged reinvigorated from the break, and drew level six minutes into the second half when Jeffrey Bruma rose to meet a cross from Gokhan Tore and headed home.
Robert Tesche scored the winner for Hamburg in the 67th minute, firing a right-footed shot past Sven Ulreich in the Stuttgart goal to claim three much-needed points for the visitors.
Stuttgart are in sixth place, but are likely to fall lower throughout the weekend, while Hamburg rose to 17th, leaving newly promoted Augsburg bottom of the table.
