Wolfsburg ended a run of four losses in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 win over bottom side Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday.
It was Wolfsburg’s third league appearance under the guidance of caretaker manager Pierre Littbarski following Steve McLaren’s sacking earlier this month, and their first win since the former England manager was forced out of the club.
Diego was both hero and villain for his side at the Volkswagen Arena, as he missed a 29th minute penalty before scoring twice prior to the break to give the hosts a healthy advantage.
Monchengladbach pulled a goal back in the 74th minute when Filip Daems converted a spot kick, but it was not enough to see the strugglers escape last position on the table.
The win took Wolfsburg into 13th place, three clear of the drop zone, with a full fixture of matches to come this weekend.
