Czech Petr Jiracek scored a brace as Wolfsburg claimed a 3-2 win over Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Friday.
The Bundesliga’s bottom side, Freiburg, travelled to the Volkswagen Arena in desperate need of points, but came away empty handed after Jiracek found the back of the net twice.
The midfielder opened the scoring after just five minutes for Felix Magath’s side, collecting a poor headed clearance from a corner at the back post and finishing past Oliver Baumann from an acute angle.
Wolfsburg continued to press forward in search of a second, only for Freiburg to hit back against the run of play through Johannes Flum on 11 minutes.
A frenetic opening 15 minutes was completed when Marcel Schaefer restored Wolfsburg’s one goal advantage, but Daniel Caligiuri ensured the sides were level at the break when he scored on 38 minutes.
Wolfsburg were dominating possession from the outset in the second period and soon had a goal to show for it, albeit a fortunate one.
Jiracek collected the ball on the edge of the area and unleashed a powerful shot, which took a wicked deflection off a Freiburg defender and looped over Baumann and into the back of hte net.
Freiburg remain rooted to the bottom of the table, three points from safety, while Wolfsburg jump to eighth.
