Bayern Munich extended their unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga to seven games with a 3-1 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
Last season’s league winners started the day in eighth position and a whopping 14 points behind table-toppers Borussia Dortmund, but lifted spirits within the club with their convincing win.
Eintracht started the match one place higher than their more-fancied opponents but were quickly on the back foot when Ukraine midfielder Anatoliy Tymoschuk converted after impressive build-up work from Thomas Mueller.
But Bundesliga top-scorer Theofanis Gekas quickly hit back, with the Greek striker’s 12th league goal of the season levelling proceedings.
It took until the hour mark for Bayern to regain the lead, when Mueller notched just his third goal of the Bundesliga campaign.
The young forward impressed so many with his performances for Germany at the 2010 FIFA World Cup but has struggled to score regularly this season.
But this performance indicated he might be back to his best form. And just after the previously out-of-form Mueller scored, an in-form striker did as well.
Mario Gomez entered the game having scored an incredible 10 goals in his last six matches in all competitions for Bayern, and he made it 11 in seven with his 61st-minute finish.
Tymoschuk finished the rout with his second goal in a performance that suggests Bayern’s best is yet to come, ominously moving them to fifth.
An injury-time penalty from Gylfi Sigurdsson rescued a point for Hoffenheim in their 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen have not lost away in the league since April and fans of the 2001/02 Champions League finalists would have been expecting another away triumph when Sidney Sam and Arturo Vidal – from the penalty spot – gave them a two-goal lead inside the first 10 minutes.
But a Sejad Salihovic goal on the stroke of half-time lifted the hosts before a late push produced a spot-kick which the Icelandic midfielder dispatched.
Hannover moved to fourth with a 3-0 home win over Freiburg, thanks to another masterclass from Ivorian Didier Ya Konan.
Ya Konan’s superb form this season has been one of the reason for Hannover’s climb up the table and he set up the first goal for Jan Schlaudraff after 15 minutes.
The second goal took a while to come but it was Ya Konan who delivered the killer blow with his sixth strike of the season after 73 minutes, before he grabbed another assist as Mike Hanke wrapped up the result with a minute remaining.
In other matches, Kaiserslautern humbled Schalke 5-0 while Hamburg hammered Stuttgart 4-2 at home.
A Srdjan Lakic double inside the first hour wrapped up Kaiserlautern’s victory, with Martin Amedick, Ivo Ilicevic and Jan Moravek joining him on the scoresheet.
Ruud van Nistelrooy was on the scoresheet for Hamburg in their victory, which kept Stuttgart in the relegation zone.
First-half goals to Piotr Trochowski, Jonathan Pitroipa and Mladen Petric had Hamburg 3-1 up at half-time. A Christian Gentner goal just after the break made the hosts nervous until former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker van Nistelrooy netted on the hour mark.
