Bayer Leverkusen have missed a chance to put pressure on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich after a 0-0 draw against Freiburg on Saturday.

With Bayern playing against Stuttgart on Sunday, Leverkusen had the opportunity to close the gap on the league leaders to six points but were frustrated by a determined Freiburg outfit.

Supported by 22,500 fans at the Mage Solar Stadion, Freiburg shaded the possession statistics but could not prise an opening.

The result moves Leverkusen back into second place by a point from Borussia Dortmund, who defeated Nuremberg 3-0 on Friday, with Bayern eight points clear on top.

Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt remained in the top-four after a 2-1 win against struggling Hoffenheim at the Commerzbank-Arena.

Martin Lanig put the Bundesliga high-flyers up in the 35th minute but Hoffenheim hit back on 65 minutes when Kevin Volland scored against the run of play.

Barely two minutes later, Stefan Aigner put Frankfurt back in front and that was where the scoreline stayed.

Mainz moved up to fifth position with a 3-0 victory at the home of rock-bottom Greuther Fuerth.

Despite not converting their dominance in the first-half, Mainz knocked in three second-half goals through Adam Szalai (53rd and 84th minutes) and Yunus Malli (65th) to be only three points behind Frankfurt, who are in the last Champions League qualifying position.

A lightning start by Borussia Monchengladbach has helped them to a 2-1 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Fortuna defender Juanan put the ball into his own net on six minutes before Patrick Hermann doubled the lead inside a minute.

Dani Schahin got one back for the losers on 50 minutes but Fortuna could not find an equaliser.

A quality first-half allowed Hannover to post a 2-1 in over Wolfsburg in a battle between mid-table clubs.

Mohammed Abdellaoue scored the first goal in the third minute before former Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf extended the lead seven minutes before the break.

Defender Alexander Madlung put Wolfsburg back in the hunt just after half-time but the Hannover defence stayed firm for the rest of the contest.

Finally, Augsberg and Schalke played out a 0-0 draw at the SGL Arena.
