Greuther Furth kept their slim hopes of Bundesliga survival alive with a 1-0 win against local rivals Nuremburg on Sunday.
Johannes Geis scored the decisive goal in the 27th minute with a superb strike from outside the box that flew past Nuremburg goalkeeper Raphael Schafer.
Nuremburg fought relentlessly in search of an equaliser, but failed to find a way past a resilient Wolfgang Hesl in goal.
Bottom side Furth moved within nine points of an unlikely relegation playoff spot, while Nuremburg slumped to their second straight loss after going down to leaders Bayern Munich last week.
Meanwhile, Stuttgart climbed to within six points of a Europa League berth after beating fifth-placed Freiburg 2-1.
Christian Gentner and Vedad Ibisevic scored in the opening half for Stuttgart, while Ivan Santini netted a late consolation for the visitors.
