Mario Goetze’s brace helped Borussia Dortmund thrash Wolfsburg 5-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday, and Werder Bremen beat Cologne 3-2.
Teenage midfielder Goetze put Dortmund ahead 12 minutes into the match at Signal Iduna-Park, and Japan forward Shinji Kagawa made it 2-0 a minute before the break.
Former Arsenal winger Alexander Hleb pulled one back for Wolfsburg on 58 minutes.
But it took Dortmund just two minutes to restore the two-goal margin, with Sven Bender the man on target.
Robert Lewandowski weighed in with the hosts’ fourth goal in the 66th minute.
Goetze then capped off the rout when he notched Dortmund’s fifth with 13 minutes remaining.
The reigning champions are second on the table, two points behind Bayern Munich, who visit Augsburg on Sunday.
In other matches, Werder Bremen came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at home to Cologne.
Goals from Christian Clemens and Lukas Podolski saw visitors Cologne lead 2-0 by the half-time break at Weserstadion.
Claudio Pizarro pulled one back for the home side three minutes into the second half.
The veteran Peru striker levelled from the penalty spot on 54 minutes, with Cologne’s Henrique Sereno sent off for bringing down Markus Rosenberg inside the area.
The 10-man visitors looked set to hold out for a draw, before Pizarro scored with four minutes to go, completing his hat-trick and snatching all three points for Bremen.
The win lifts Thomas Schaaf’s team to third, level on points with Dortmund.
Elsewhere, Freiburg came from behind to win 2-1 at Nurnberg, courtesy of Papiss Demba Cisse’s penalty three minutes into injury time.
Borussia Moenchengladbach also fought from a goal down to win by the same scoreline, with Marco Reus’ brace enough for a 2-1 victory away to Hertha Berlin.
Hoffenheim were held 1-1 in their match at home to Kaiserslautern.
And goals from Heiko Westermann and Marcell Jansen helped Hamburg come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 away to Bayer Leverkusen.
