Hamburg strengthened their European credentials after thrashing champions Borussia Dortmund 4-1 away from home in the Bundesliga.

Hosts Dortmund, who sit second on the table, got off the perfect start on Saturday thanks to a 17th-minute goal from star striker Robert Lewandowski.

However, the away side hit back immediately through Artjoms Rudnevs and went ahead eight minutes later after South Korea’s Heung-Min Son struck his seventh goal of the campaign.

Hamburg turned the screw in the second half and doubled their advantage just after the hour mark, with Rudnevs scoring his second before Son added gloss to the score-line in the dying minutes by also bagging a brace.

The win sees Hamburg move to fifth on the table, six points outside the Champions League places, with sixth-placed Mainz yet to play this weekend.

Dortmund remain second after third-placed Bayer Leverkusen failed to overcome Borussia Monchengladbach in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Martin Stranzl put Gladbach ahead on the stroke of half-time before Sidney Sam levelled the scores seven minutes after the restart.

The goals continued to flow as the game wore on, with Luuk de Jong restoring the home side’s lead in the 58th minute before quick-fire strikes from Stefan Kiessling and Andre Schurrle put Leverkusen ahead for the first time in the match.

They could not hold on however, with a late Patrick Herrmann strike ensuring the points were shared as Leverkusen move to within a point of Dortmund, while Gladbach remain well placed to challenge for a Europa League birth in seventh spot.

In the day’s other matches, a strong second-half performance saw Werder Bremen record an impressive 4-1 win away to Stuttgart, as Wolfsburg compounded Greuther Furth’s relegation troubles with a 1-0 win.

Hannover overcame Hoffenheim by the same score-line, with Eintracht Frankfurt and Nurnberg playing out a 0-0 draw.
