Cologne climbed off the bottom of the Bundesliga table with a 1-0 away win at fellow strugglers Stuttgart on Sunday.
New Cologne boss Frank Schaefer guided his side to their second win in four league matches and lifted them above Borussia Monchengladbach at the foot of German top-flight football.
Schafer’s arrival has lifted spirits within the squad and they stunned more than 39,000 fans in Stuttgart with their victory, with German international Lucas Podolski’s 82nd-minute penalty sealing the result.
Fellow bottom-half sides St Pauli and Wolfsburg played out a 1-1 draw in Hamburg in the day’s other game.
Markus Thorandt put St Pauli ahead after 28 minutes as they looked to win their first match in five.
But Wolfsburg frontman Edin Dzeko had other ideas as he scored an equaliser in the 54th minute which ensured both sides would share the spoils.
