Schalke moved four points clear of the Bundesliga relegation zone on Sunday with a 1-0 away win over Mainz, who remain fourth.

After heading into the match in 15th position, just one point ahead of Cologne, Felix Magath’s side were desperate for all three points.

They took the lead on the half-hour mark when Lukas Schmitz got in behind the Mainz defence and cut the ball back to Jose Jurado, who fired a shot toward goal.

The ball deflected of Raul’s back and into the path of Jefferson Fanfan , who blasted a low left-foot shot past Christian Wetklo in the Mainz goal.

Despite a strong fight back from Mainz, they could not break down a stubborn Schalke defence and 1-0 was where it stayed.

Elsewhere, Freiburg moved into fifth spot with a 3-0 win over bottom-placed Borussia Monchengladbach.

Papiss Demba Cisse opened the scoring after 19 minutes when he headed home from the edge of the six-yard box after Maximilian Nicu turned Monchengladbach defender Sebastian Scachten and delivered a pinpoint cross.

Oliver Barth doubled their advantage four minutes from half-time before Cisse scored his second on the hour mark to seal the win when he fired past Christofer Heimeroth in the Monchengladbach goal.
