Burnley and Tottenham both needed the three points to move closer to the UEFA Europa League qualifying zone. However, neither The Clarets nor The Spurs were able to dominate the match and, as a result, the game ended in a 1-1 score at Turf Moor.

Chris Wood opened the score for Burnley in the first half. Dele Alli equalized for Tottenham early in the second half with a penalty. However, it turned out to be a tight, scrappy game as evidenced by the fact referee Jon Moss showed nine yellow cards. In a way, it was a miracle to see both sides ending the match at full strength.

The Clarets looked better at the beginning of the game, and they translated that momentum into an early lead when Wood netted his 11th goal of the season in the 13rd minute. The Australia international showcased his poacher skills when he smashed home a rebound from inside the box.

The Spurs didn’t have many chances to score during the first half and, if any side would have added another goal, it would have been Burnley. Dwight McNeil had the clearer with a free kick saved by Lloris. The first half ended with a 1-0 lead for the hosts, and Jose Mourinho was visibly upset with his side’s performance in the first 45 minutes.

Mourinho’s changes flip the script after the break

Mourinho made changes at the break, sending Lucas and Giovani Lo Celso in place of Oliver Skipp and Tanguy Ndombele, respectively. The moves had an instant impact since the Spurs needed just five minutes to even things up after the break. Alli netted the equalizer with a penalty after a challenge from Ben Mee.

The central defender brought down Erik Lamela, and the England international coolly converted while sending Nick Pope the other way.

The remaining 40 minutes were extremely hard fought, and Moss showed eight yellow cards during the second half. There were a few chances, though. Lo Celso could’ve scored in the 82nd minute for the Spurs, but his effort went wide. Vydra had a chance to score the winner for Burnley two minutes afterwards, but Lloris was impressive to deny his close-range effort.

In the end, the match ended with a 1-1 draw. This result doesn’t help either side based on their position in the standings. However, it was a fair outcome considering what happened at Turf Moor throughout the course of the 90 minutes.
